Every pro guitar player has a signature sound. Sometimes all you have to do is hear a few notes and you know exactly who the guitarist is. If you're a guitar player who's trying to sound professional, there are a few things you can work on that don't involve a flurry of notes.

Tempo – Sometimes playing slow is harder than playing fast. Practice with a metronome or a drum track and learn to play eighth notes, quarter notes and triplets at different tempos.

Vibrato – It doesn't matter whether it's fast or slow, just get some! And learn to vibrato with ALL your fingers.

Bending – There is nothing more amateur sounding than a bend that isn't up to pitch.

Phrasing – How you slide into a note or out of a note is a big part of your signature sound. Listen to how the pros do it.

So before you start sweep picking, tapping and dive-bombing, make sure you can make just a few notes sound like you know what you're doing.
